  53.      Connecting the cables between your hard drive and the  controller  card 
  54. looks quite simple...but if you get one of the connectors on backward, it
  55. can be a real pain trying to figure out why your hard drive is not working.

  57.      There is a simple rule to follow which will make the cable installation
  58. very easy.  The rule is just keep track of the "RED" stripe on the side of  
  59. the cable.

  61.      Look at the illustration below.  On the controller card there are three
  62. places to connect a cable.  There is one 34 PIN connector (2 rows of 17 pins)
  63. and two 20 PIN connectors (2 rows of 10 pins each).

  65.      You will notice on the illustration and on your controller card there
  66. are numbers by each of the corner pins of the connector.  On the 34 PIN con-
  67. nector, there are the numbers 1 and 2 at one end of the connector, and the 
  68. numbers 33 and 34 on the other end of the connector.
  69.      Although this is the numbering system used on most connectors, other
  70. connectors may use a slightly different system.  Don't let that throw you,
  71. all you are interested in is finding the number 1.  Some connectors will
  72. only have the number 1, and no other numbers.

  91.      As you can see, the same type system is used on the 20 PIN connector.
  92. 1 and 2 on one end of the connector, and 10 and 20 on the other end. Here
  93. again, the numbering system may be different.  All you want to do it find
  94. the number 1 pin. 
  95.      NOTE:  YOU WILL WANT TO CONNECT YOUR 20 PIN CABLE TO THE CONNECTOR
  96. THAT IS THE CLOSEST TO THE 34 PIN CONNECTOR.

  98.      Now, the TRICK is to just connect the side of the cable with the "RED"
  99. stripe next to the number 1 on each connector.

  101.      Although this seems very simple, you would be supprised how many people
  102. even the professionals, who occiationally screw this up, just because they
  103. don't remember the TRICK.
  104.  
  105.      Now, for the other end of the cable.  The disk drive has two connectors
  106. that are actually part of the circuit board.  The other end of your cable 
  107. has a connector with a  slit across it that will plug onto the circuit 
  108. board connector.

  110.      Notice, on the connector that is part of the circuit board.  It has 
  111. little "GOLD CONTACTS" that stick out.  One of the connectors has 17 con-
  112. tacts, and the other one has 10.  At one side of both of these connectors
  113. about 2 contacts from the end, there is a notch in the connector.

  115.      What you want to do is take the connector on the end of your cable
  116. and slip it on to the circuit board connector...keeping the "RED" stripe 
  117. at the same side of the connector as the notch.

  119.      Do this on both of the connectors.  Now your cables are connected and
  120. you are ready to go....ALMOST.

  122.      Located on the back end of the board is a rectangular shaped white
  123. power connector.  Take one of the power lines (WITH 4 WIRES) and plug it
  124. into this connector.  Don't worry, you can't get in backwards...it will 
  125. only go in one way.

  127.      See how quick and easy that was.  Now, turn on your computer and get 
  128. out your DOS manual.  You are all ready to initialize and format your
  129. hard drive.
